Charles Marshall

Charles Marshall is an award-winning hospitality leader whose career spans over four decades of general management and area leadership across some of the world’s most distinguished hotel brands. A graduate of the University of Strathclyde’s Scottish Hotel School, Charles began his career in London’s finest establishments — Grosvenor House, The Café Royal, and Forum Hotel — before embarking on a remarkable international trajectory that has taken him from Edinburgh and Athens to Jakarta, Phnom Penh, Manila, Taipei, and Kuala Lumpur. His career has been defined by an exceptional ability to build, transform, and elevate hotel businesses across widely different markets and conditions.

During his tenure with IHG, Charles achieved a series of landmark turnarounds. At InterContinental Edinburgh, he elevated the property to a top 15 global profit contributor within the company and led it to four consecutive Investors in People awards, serving also as Chairman of the Edinburgh Principal Hotels Association. As General Manager of InterContinental Phnom Penh, he engineered one of his most celebrated recoveries — driving occupancy from 25% to 60% and gross operating profit from 4% to 41% within two years, earning the Best 360 Performance Award for InterContinental Asia Pacific. He subsequently led a successful pre-opening in Taichung, Taiwan, and went on to serve as General Manager of both InterContinental Manila and Crowne Plaza Jakarta, where the hotel became an IHG Beta site and regional sales hub.

As Area General Manager for IHG Malaysia, Charles led a cluster of five hotels generating revenues of approximately USD 75 million and a GOP of USD 29.6 million — growing cluster revenues by 51.3% and GOP by 61.7% over two years, while lifting guest experience ratings and employee engagement to 82.6%. His final executive role was as General Manager of Hilton Petaling Jaya, where he steered the property to Hotel of the Year 2018 for Hilton Southeast Asia, a TripAdvisor Rank 1 position, and a Top 10 contribution to trading profit across the Hilton worldwide portfolio — all while navigating a doubling of competitive supply in the market.

Charles retired in 2020 following a career that has touched every dimension of hotel leadership — pre-openings, turnarounds, multi-unit management, employee engagement, environmental stewardship, and community partnership. His breadth of experience across Asia, Europe, and Africa, his deep commitment to developing people, and his proven track record of delivering sustainable financial performance make him an invaluable member of the Asianhotelier.Org Advisory Board, where his insight serves as a guiding benchmark for excellence in Asian hospitality.
